Connecticut, The Constitution State, the Nutmeg State, or the Land of Steady Habits. Whatever you call it, Connecticut is an amazing state with a list of accomplishments so long it will make your eyes roll.
Part of the Tri-State area, Connecticut boasts that it’s one of the most densely populated states and has the highest income per capita in all of the United States. Wealth isn’t what makes this particular state amazing, but more importantly who it’s birthed and its historical significance.
Surrounded by the birthplaces of the United States of America, and more specifically the constitution, Connecticut has been involved in the founding and growth of the US since the very beginning.
Connecticut’s impact on the financial industry in America cannot be measured. In 1837, one of the most important bankers to ever exist was born – the one and only J.P. Morgan. Founder of the Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones, Charles Dow, was born shortly after in Sterling, CT.
Outside of finance, there are many other industries that would never be the same because of the Provisions State. Katherine Hepburn, Mark Twain, Jackie Robinson and Noah Webster were all also born in Connecticut, and all of them went on to revolutionize the way we see film, literature and sports today.
Tourism in the Nutmeg State
Believe it or not, tourism in Connecticut accounts for just under 7% of the total state revenue! The Connecticut Commission of Culture & Tourism says tourism brings in $14 billion in ‘economic activity’ and creates 170,000 jobs annually.
The art scene alone creates 44 THOUSAND jobs and brings in 3 billion in revenue to the citizens of Connecticut, every single year.
Connecticut’s Healthcare Industry
Connecticut’s largest hospital, Yale New Haven Health System, is truly a sight to behold. Treating almost 80,000 patients in 2014 with 12,000 employees including 2,000 doctors, YNHHS is constantly growing and constantly needing more doctors and nurses.
With over 2,000 beds Yale New Haven Health System’s capacity for treating patients is tremendous. That said, YNHHS still holds a quality over quantity belief system which is why they are often ranked in the top 10 hospitals in the United States!
According to the Connecticut Department of Labor the healthcare industry is one of the fastest growing job markets, only being matched by Computer Science. The projected growth rate in to 2022 for healthcare is 17.2% overall, and 19% for healthcare technicians like MRI techs, dental hygienists and pharmacy technicians.
Not only are there going to be a staggering amount of new jobs available in this field, the annual wages are actually higher than the national average. The average annual wage for Healthcare Practitioners in 2014 was almost $59k per year, with the national average sitting around $52,000 per year.
Additionally, 3 of the top 10 fastest growing companies in CT were healthcare companies.
What Does Tourism Have to Do with Healthcare?
Well, every healthcare facility creates medical waste in one way or another. Weather they are a dentist, a large hospital, a surgery center or even a family practice.
In the 1980s there was a medical waste problem in the United States. Needles and other junk started to wash up on the shores of New Jersey, injuring wildlife and visitors. This led to the first medical waste disposal regulations, the Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988.
If infectious waste was just thrown in Connecticut’s beautiful wildlife, tourists wouldn’t be inclined to visit, and residents may even want to leave!
Proper biohazardous waste disposal isn’t difficult. In fact, we have an all in one guide to properly handling and disposing of your medical waste – The Complete Guide to Biohazard Waste Disposal.
