Named proudly after the Lakota and Dakota Native American tribes, South Dakota still houses a large portion of Native American descent. With large farming grounds and plentiful land, fertile crops are harvested not only for the people, but for the performance of South Dakota’s economy.

Sioux Falls is single-handedly the largest town in the great state of South Dakota. The 2010 census recorded a population of 153,888 residents. Founded in 1856, retail, finance, and health care have grown to be the major driving forces of economic performance. Originally, South Dakota was highly reliant on their farming capabilities. Next in line is Rapid City. With a population of roughly 68,000, Rapid City stands in second place, right behind Sioux Falls. The economy of Rapid City is largely based on their attraction for tourism and defense spending. The Ellsworth Air Force Base, spoken of earlier, is a great contributor to tourism outcome.
