National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October

October 1st marks the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide. Breast cancer is the most common type in the United States, and almost 30% of women get diagnosed yearly. However, it mainly occurs in middle-aged and older women, and the average age of a breast cancer diagnosis is 62. Fortunately, it is rare for women under 45 years of age to be diagnosed with the disease. Behind lung cancer breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women, and about 2.5% of women will die from breast cancer each year. However, if the cancer is caught early, women have a 5-year survival rate of 90% and a 10-year survival rate of 84%. For these reasons, it is essential to be informed about the signs to look for and the best ways of preventing a severe diagnosis.
