Kentucky, home of horse racing, bourbon, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Also known as the Bluegrass State, but interestingly enough it’s not named after the musical genre.

The actual origins stem from Kentucky’s amazingly fertile soil where the bluegrass can freely grow and thrive off the nutrients.

With 4.5 million residents, Kentucky sits as the 26th most populous state in America. Despite it’s relatively low population, the state still managed to export almost 28 billion dollars’ worth of products and services in 2015, according to Kentucky’s Cabinet for Economic Development.

Kentucky is also home to, in my opinion, the most amusing state holiday in the US – Tater Day. The people of Kentucky come together and have a day of fun based around sweet potatoes. Carnival rides, concerts, horse shows and races, and the Tater Day Parade make up most of the day, but what people really want is the final attraction: The Biggest Potato contest.

Aside from Potato Day, my real favorite thing about Kentucky is the people. Their culture is an interesting and unique blend of Midwestern, Appalachian and Southern values which culminates in a beautifully polite and welcoming environment.

Part of the populations compassion is shown in their amazing amount of preserved nature. Kentucky has a staggering 45 state parks and 37,000 acres of state forests.

Bordering the Mississippi river, Kentuckians are no strangers to water. In his book “You Live Where? Interesting and Unusual Facts About Where We Live” George E. Thompson says “Kentucky’s 90 thousand miles of streams provides one of the most expansive and complex stream systems in the nation.” Kentucky loves water so much, they even have the two largest man made lakes, Lake Cumberland and the Kentucky Lake.

Healthcare in Kentucky

With just over 10,000 active physicians and 2,500 dentists, the residents of Kentucky have no shortage of healthcare options in larger cities.

The rural residents, however, can have a difficult time finding specialty doctors which leads to long trips to cities like Louisville and Frankfort. These trips cost time (sometimes having to take a full day off work to see their doctor), money for gas, money for child care, and money for the doctor’s appointment itself.

Out of the states 125 hospitals 59 are located in urban areas while 67 are located in rural areas, according to a 2012 study done by the University of Kentucky. Because of the large spread of rural towns across KY, 67 hospitals still doesn’t cover everybody. Along with a lack of rural hospitals, there is also a lack of healthcare education and emergency services in these areas leading to some of the towns having the lowest life expectancy in America.

The state government is doing things to combat this, though. Rapid expansion of the healthcare industry is the main initiative with the Kentucky Career Center saying “Healthcare Support Occupations are projected to be the fastest growing occupational group with a 38.2 percent increase in employment; close behind are Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations at 29.6 percent and Community and Social Service Occupations at 21.8 percent.”

For reference in the same time period (2014 to 2024) the job market in Kentucky is expected to expand just 15%.

With More Hospitals Comes More Waste

While the growth of hospitals and doctors in Kentucky is undoubtedly a great thing, nothing is free from consequences. Average sized hospitals create 80,000 pounds of medical waste a year, and that waste has to go somewhere.

In the past hospitals have thrown biohazardous waste into lakes, rivers and regular garbage – each of these practices equally harmful to not only the environment, but people as well. When medical waste isn’t properly disposed of it can be taken by local wildlife, leak into the water supply or in the case of sharps waste potentially stab and infect garbage workers.

Properly disposing of waste isn’t difficult, you just have to know the process. For medical and biohazardous waste you put the waste into a red biohazard bag and then into a sealed container when you are ready to remove of it, for pharmaceuticals there are drop off locations or mailback programs, and for sharps you must put the needles in a hard sharps container.

Us at MedPro particularly love nature which is why we offer a wide range of affordable disposal services, ranging from medical and biohazardous disposal to sharps and pharmaceutical disposal.

Classifications of Waste
