The MedPro Disposal Sales Team Weighs In on Why They Love “Talking Trash”

“What do you do for a living?”

“Where do you work?”

We’re asked these questions often. When you work in an industry like medical waste disposal it can be hard to talk about exactly what you do over the dinner table without people starting to get grossed out. However, there are many great things about medical waste disposal despite the fact that it’s essentially garbage! When you think about safety and the environment, medical waste disposal is not just important – it’s vital.

#1 Concern: Safety

Safety is of course the number one concern in the medical industry. So, proper medical waste management is vital to keeping employees and patients safe. However, it doesn’t stop there. Proper segregation and disposal of waste helps protect refuse workers, the public and even animals safe from dangerous and potentially infectious substances found in RMW waste.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that, in 2000, contaminated syringes caused:

  • 21 million hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections (32% of all new infections);
  • two million hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections (40% of all new infections); and
  • at least 260 000 HIV infections (5% of all new infections).

In 2002, another WHO assessment conducted in 22 developing countries showed the proportion of healthcare facilities that did not use proper waste disposal methods ranged from 18% to 64%.

Protecting the Environment with Medical Waste Disposal

In addition to protecting the people and animals on our planet, we need to consider protecting the planet itself. Incineration of waste not only releases harmful toxic air pollutants, it takes up space in landfills as well. Why cover our earth in harmful and dangerous garbage when there are other options? Some types of medical waste can be disinfected and melted down with autoclaves to then be recycled or placed in a landfill. The autoclave melting the waste significantly cuts down on the space the waste takes up in a landfill. In addition, there are not the harmful dioxins and furans released as is the case with incineration.

In addition to proper disposal, it is important to educate your staff with proper training to ensure they are segregating the waste correctly. Hazardous waste must be handled and treated differently than medical and sharps waste (aka biohazardous waste) and is subject to different laws and regulations. This is because these harmful substances can be very dangerous when handled incorrectly.
