Nestled in the northern area of Fulton County Georgia, Roswell is bordered by the towns of Milton, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Peachtree Corners as well as Sandy Springs. It is considered to be Georgia’s most populous city with under 100,000 people. As with so many of the southern towns, Roswell is rich in historic landmarks including the old 1839 Roswell Presbyterian Church, Bulloch Hall, Barrington Hall, and the Archibald Smith Plantation Home.

The town’s origins began with Roswell King’s 1830 trip into northern Georgia. His vision included the idea that this area would be perfect for a cotton mill along Vickery Creek. He returned to build the Roswell Mill that would eventually become the largest in north Georgia and, as many plantations and industries of the time, he brought with him African slaves as well as skilled carpenters. The slaves brought their Geechee language, culture and religion which heavily influenced the area.

With his success, King invited investors as well as one of his sons to work the land and each of these individuals brought additional African American slaves that worked in both the residences and the plantation. By 1854 the local residents wanted to incorporate their town. As the Civil Union Forces captured the city and mill workers were prevented from returning to work by sending them to the north. After the war was over Barrington King returned to rebuild the mills and established paid labor in both the town and the plantations.

Roswell has gone through many of the nation’s problems, including the Great Depression, leading them to make concessions by merging with Fulton County. However, this historic southern area has achieved a number of recognitions and honors, including:
