Named after the Italian word for “fountain” or “water source,” Fontana received its name due to its proximity to the Santa Ana River. The town is cozied up to the San Bernardino Mountains and remained a quiet little rural community until World War II. It was during this time that Henry J. Kaiser decided to use this location for a large steel mill which quickly transitioned the area into a growing population. With State Route 210, Interstate 10, and Interstate 15 as main arteries, Fontana is now the center of the trucking industry.
With a population of over 211,000, Fontana residents have doubled since 1990. They have a consistently warm climate with hot summers due to the Santa Ana winds that blow in from the Mojave Desert.
During the 1950’s-1960’s, Fontana was the heart of the NHRA circuit for drag racing. The Fontana International Dragway was founded by Mickey Thompson and eventually became defunct. However, the love of the sport is still in the area, and in 2006 the Auto Club Speedway NASCAR owners resurrected their heritage with a new drag strip.
