Iowa, The Hawkeye state, is located in the Midwestern US. The state is bordered by Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota with the Mississippi River running along the eastern side and the Missouri River to the west. The states rolling hills and open prairies attracted farmers and ranchers to the area in the 1800s. Today, the mainly agricultural economy has shifted as larger urban areas and cities like Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids have brought in manufacturing, engineering, and finance jobs to the area.

Iowa was initially part of the French owned territory, Louisiana. French and English trappers moved to the area and began setting up trading posts along the Mississippi River. After the Louisiana Purchase, the territory changed ownership to the United States. Settlers began moving into the territory and with the introduction of the railroad system, created an agricultural economy. In the 20th century, a large population shift occurred with families moving to more urban environments. Manufacturing has grown to be Iowa’s largest generator with 16% of the states workforce in the food processing and heavy machinery industry. The agriculture sector has been slowly declining, but still plays an important role as the country largest producer of ethanol derived from corn.

Health insurance is big sector in Iowa’s economy with 16 organizations providing health insurance products. Some of the state’s largest employers are in the healthcare industry. Iowa Health System employs over 24,000 people. Rural healthcare facilities are feeling the burden of servicing an aging population and the migration of the population to more urban areas. The removal of regulated medical and biohazard waste disposal can be five times as expensive as normal waste. This is because the waste needs to be contained, picked up, and treated by a licensed medical waste hauler.

MedPro Disposal offers a low cost alternative to medical waste disposal for Iowa residents. Our company was founded in 2009 after hearing about frequent price increases in the medical waste industry. We have grown to service 46 states by offering clear savings and a transparent contract. We will put together a customized quote based on a facilities specific needs.

Our services include medical and biohazard waste disposal, OSHA compliance training, and pharmaceutical disposal. Whether its sharps needles or red bag waste, we will offer a compliant solution to removing your waste safely and cost effectively. Our prices are based on 2 key pieces of information. How much waste are you generating and how frequent to you require a pick-up? Our knowledgeable account representatives can then negotiate a rate that makes sense.

Our sharps and pharmaceutical mail back program is a great option for rural Iowa locations or low quantity generators. The fully compliant containers can be shipped to your facility via USPS mail complete with return shipping label to our treatment facility. The pharmaceutical containers are safe for OTC/Rx and controlled drugs scheduled I-V. Controlled substances require an additional step to meet state and federal regulations.

Our OSHA compliance training portal provides a user friendly platform to get your entire team certified and up to date on all regulations. We offer certification programs for BBP, ICD-10, HazCom, and more. Employees can complete training through interactive videos and multiple choice questions to test knowledge. Upon completion, certifications can be printed or saved for future reference. The platform makes it easy for an administrator to manage the progress of the entire team.

MedPro provides Iowa healthcare practices with a low cost alternative to medical waste disposal. We will create a right-sized service plan that directly meets your unique needs. With MedPro can ensure that there are hidden fees or surcharges. With MedPro, the price you pay is the price we quote!

Iowa EPA State Definitions

Classifications of Waste

Regulated medical waste (RMW), also known as ‘biohazardous’ waste or ‘infectious medical’ waste, is the portion of the waste stream that may be contaminated by blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious materials, thus posing a significant risk of transmitting infection.

Types of Wastes

Contaminated sharps are all discarded sharp items derived from patient care in medical, research, or industrial facilities including glass vials containing materials defined as infectious, suture needles, hypodermic needles, scalpel blades, and Pasteur pipettes. Cultures and stocks of infectious agents are specimen cultures collected from medical and pathological laboratories, cultures and stocks of infectious agents from research and industrial laboratories, wastes from the production of biological agents, discarded live and attenuated vaccines, and culture dishes and devices used to transfer, inoculate or mix cultures. Blood and blood products. Pathological wastes are human tissues and body parts that are removed during surgery or autopsy.

Storage Requirements

Medical waste management is regulated under the state’s solid waste program, if it is treated properly. Infectious solid waste which is generated and treated at a medical clinic, doctor’s office, nursing care facility, health care facility, dentist’s office or other similar facility may be placed with municipal solid waste and not handled in a special way if it is rendered non-pathological, does not contain free liquids, and sharps are shredded, blunted, granulated, incinerated or mechanically destroyed.
